Buying email data can save time, effort and expenses compared to building your own list, but your data will not be good quality, targeted, relevant or accurate. This article gives advice on growing an organic email list and increasing clicks.
Growing your organic email list
Ensure your email sign up form is visible on your website, in a prominent place. If you choose to use pop-up subscription windows, ensure they are subtle and not annoying which are usually closed straight away by visitors wanting to get back to the webpage content. Give users a compelling reason to want to hear from you, instead of just saying ‘sign-up to our monthly newsletter’ – offer exclusive and newsletter-only offers and promotions.
Make sure the subscription form is short and sweet so you don’t put subscribers off while entering their details in. If you have any questions you would like to include, don’t make them compulsory. Also ensure that subscribers’ personal details will not be shared with any third parties; nobody likes spam!
Embed sign-up forms on your social media pages, blog and eBooks. It’s just another simple way to increase your email list. When providing online competitions, ask all entrants to put their emails on the entry form. Also if you attend networking events, business events and trade shows, use apps to collect contact details and email addresses.
Increasing clicks from your emails
Firstly, ensure your email content is interesting and relevant for people to want to stay subscribed. After putting your hard work in to get the subscribers in the first place, you wouldn’t want them to end up leaving your email list! Shorter emails get better click-through rates than longer ones. A recent Hubspot survey showed that the emails getting the highest click-through rates were only 300-500 words long.
The click through rate of emails is higher when using the recipients’ first name in the subject line over no use of the first name. Make the subject personal, don’t include the words “free” or “offer” because people will see this as spam. A lot of the time, people don’t remember everything they sign up to by email so they may not remember signing up to your company. Also adding social sharing buttons to email messages can increase click-through rates by more than 150%.
At the end of 2014, 53% of emails were opened in mobile devices, and this number is expected to grow this year. Ensure your emails not only look great on desktop screens, but also on smartphones and tablets.
Always try to segment your email list into different groups and tailor the emails you send specifically to those groups. One good way that they can be segmented is into “customers” and “prospects”.
